Se cumplieron las expectativas en la 84 edición de los Óscar 2012, y la película francesa The Artist, de Michel Hazanaviciusse, se ha coronado con cinco estatuillas: mejor película, mejor director , mejor actor (el francés Jean Durjadin), mejor banda sonora y mejor vestuario. Reseñar el detalle de ser la primera película de producción francesa que gana el Óscar a Mejor Película.
En una gala que tenía a Billy Crystal en su novena vez como anfitrión de los Óscars, la segunda triunfadora de la noche ha sido la película de Martin Scorsese, La Invención de Hugo (la más nominada), que ha conseguido también cinco estatuillas empatando con The Artist, aunque han sido 5 premios de los llamados menores (o técnicos): mejor fotografía, mejor dirección artística, mejor edición de sonido, mejor sonido y mejores efectos especiales.
En lo que se refiere a a actores/actrices los ganadores han sido el ya citado Jean Dujardin a mejor actor, Meryl Streep, que se ha llevado su tercer Óscar como mejor actriz protagonista en su 17ª nominación, Octavia Spencer como mejor actriz de reparto por Criadas y señoras y Christopher Plummer como mejor actor de reparto por Beginners.
Además, la noche de Los Ángeles ha premiado a Woody Allen con el el Óscar al mejor guión original por su película (de producción española) Midnight in Paris y Alexander Payne al mejor guión adaptado por Los Descendientes.
